"Travel Portraiture" - the term can often strike fear into the hearts of even the most experienced photographers!
The act of actually capturing images of local people can seem daunting to many, but with a little confidence, patience and a modicum of local knowledge, this can be one of the most rewarding aspects of Travel Photography.
For the best images, it is vital to obtain the trust and co-operation of the person involved, this way they will give you the all important 'eye contact' required for a truly great shot.
Spending a little time with those involved will be both a rewarding and beneficial experience for both of you and appearing interested in a subjects work and life will put them at ease.
Even if you do not speak the language, learn the basics of "Hello" "Please" and "Thankyou" - when used with a smile just these three words alone will break down barriers between you. The rest can then be achieved by simple hand-gestures.
The more you try it, the easier it becomes... and it can be a truly rewarding experience to capture an image that you know can not easily be copied!
